Mayor Carlos Gimenez just gave his annual State of the County address at Port Miami.
Gimemez said the county had a strong 2018, touting low levels of unemployment and crime. He says unemployment fell to 3.6%, the lowest in almost a decade, and that the overall crime rate decreased by more than 6%.
Miami-Dade is hoping to get funding to build a mass transit system by removing itself from a list of Sanctuary Cities.
Under a new policy approved by Mayor Carlos Gimenez and the county commission, illegal immigrants who have been jailed for other crimes will be turned over to the federal government for questioning if it is requested. Previously, the county only honored such requests if the feds paid to hold them.
Developing an economic impact study for an activity that will become legal is challenging without actual data, but a report by the county administration analyzed anticipated jobs and sales for a future medical marijuana industry to estimate $61.9 million for Miami-Dade, growing to $62.8 million by 2025.
